North Shore suburbs we cover

From Devonport to Long Bay and across to Greenhithe. A painter who works your side of the Shore comes to you to quote.

North Shore House Painting covers the whole of Auckland's North Shore, from Devonport and Takapuna in the south to Long Bay and Albany in the north, and west to Birkenhead, Glenfield and Greenhithe. There is no walk-in shop. Tell us your suburb and what needs painting, and a painter who works your part of the Shore comes to look at the house and puts the price in writing. Below are the areas we cover and the homes you see most in each.

  • Devonport and the peninsula. Devonport, Stanley Point, Cheltenham, Narrow Neck, Bayswater, Belmont and Hauraki. Many weatherboard villas and bungalows, some with heritage or special character rules, and sea air on every side.
  • Takapuna and Milford. Takapuna, Milford, Hauraki Corner, Castor Bay and Forrest Hill. Coastal homes from many decades, apartments and townhouses, and plenty of two-storey houses that need scaffolding.
  • East Coast Bays. Campbells Bay, Mairangi Bay, Murrays Bay, Rothesay Bay, Browns Bay, Torbay and Long Bay. Weatherboard and plaster homes on sloping sections, many facing the sea.
  • Northcote, Birkenhead and the harbour side. Northcote, Northcote Point, Birkenhead, Chatswood, Beach Haven and Birkdale. Bungalows, state houses and heritage homes near the water, often on steep sites.
  • Glenfield and the middle Shore. Glenfield, Hillcrest, Sunnynook, Totara Vale, Bayview and Marlborough. Brick and tile homes, weatherboard family houses and newer infill.
  • Albany and the north-west. Albany, Greenhithe, Unsworth Heights, Pinehill, Oteha, Northcross and Fairview Heights. Newer plaster and brick homes, and larger sections in Greenhithe.

Close to the sea, the paint works harder

Salt, wind and strong sun wear the sea side of a house faster than the sheltered side. On the coast from Devonport to Long Bay, painters usually plan more washing, more rust treatment on iron roofs and fixings, and closer checks of timber on the exposed walls. A regular house wash between repaints keeps salt off the paint.

Suburbs not on the list

If you are on the North Shore, we very likely cover your suburb. The list above is a sample, not the limit. Send the form with your suburb, and a painter who works your area will contact you. If your street is outside the area, we'll tell you straight away rather than leave you waiting.

Heritage rules in some suburbs

Some North Shore properties have heritage controls or sit in special character areas, particularly in older parts of Devonport, Northcote Point and Birkenhead. Changes to the outside of the house can need approval there, including some colour changes. Auckland Council has an online check for heritage controls. A like-for-like repaint usually needs no consent.

On homes built before the 1980s, Health New Zealand advises presuming lead in the old paint until a test shows otherwise. Your painter plans the preparation around it.

FAQs

Do painters charge more in Devonport or Takapuna?

Prices depend far more on the house than the suburb: its size, the condition of the paint, the repairs, the height and the access. Steep sections and two-storey homes need scaffolding wherever they are. Coastal homes may need more preparation on the exposed sides. See house painting prices for the published ranges.

Can a painter look at the house while I'm at work?

For an exterior quote, often yes, if the painter can walk round safely and knows about gates, dogs and alarms. For interiors someone needs to be home. Say what suits you in the form, and the painter will arrange a time.

Do you paint rentals and holiday homes?

Yes. Rentals are painted the same way as any other house. Mention in the form if there are tenants, so the painter can plan access and give them notice. Landlords often book interior repaints between tenancies.
